Kaleidoscope of Colours – The Onyx Demo Sessions 1967

(Wooden Hill WHCD027. 2009)

After signing up with the Bob Potter International Entertainment Agency in the summer of 1967 The Onyx made the leap from popular regional band to playing in the big leagues. They relocated to Surrey and began a relentless touring schedule which took them the length and breadth of the UK, as well as into Holland, Germany and Ireland.

When not on the road they would return to their digs at Bob Potters’ where they had free reign of his recording studio. Under the supervision of engineer Dave West the band would lay down songs written on the road and try out some new ideas. A particular creative period for the band, they recorded 19 tracks, all prior to the release of their first single.

Amongst these tracks were early versions of You’ve Gotta Be With Me, So Sad Inside and Billy. They also laid down their own version of Climb That Tree, later released by the She Trinity, and Kaleidoscope of Colours, which goes someway in living up to its title.

In 2009 Wooden Hill Records released these demos in their entirety, making it the first Onyx collection available.

Compilation Appearances

In the absence of an official Onyx singles compilation (thanks in part to the logistical nightmare are licensing tracks from Pye, CBS, Parlophone, Decca AND Deram) the only way to hear those glorious pop psych singles is by tracking down the increasingly scarce original releases, or by picking up a selection of highlights via various compilation appearances.

Here’s where to look (most releases should still be in print).
